For students, membership in HKN is a great honor, but it is also much more. College chapter activities offer opportunities to participate in projects and activities to improve your EE/CE department, aid fellow ECE students, help your local community, and reach out to local schools in various ways to encourage and excite these young people to study and work hard to get a good education. These activities allow HKN members to learn and experience teamwork and leadership in the very best and most effective way - hands-on!! And the personal satisfaction of doing something truly good for mankind really feels terrific!! In real life there seems to be a causal relationship between doing good, and doing well. In addition to the chapter activities, there are opportunities to participate in the leadership of the chapter as one of several chapter officers, or as the leader of one of the chapters several projects and activities.
Not insignificant is the fact that there are 150,000 or so members practicing EE/CE out there in the working world at all levels from bottom to top, that understand, recognize, and appreciate the unique scholarship, character, leadership, and teamwork qualities of young HKN member graduates - especially those that have participated as chapter officers and project team leaders. Almost as if by magic a natural attraction takes place, and it has nothing to do with politics, or favoritism - it has only to do with quality!!
One more comment for your deliberation: Eta Kappa Nu is an honor society, and IEEE is a technical/professional society. We are not in competition. We work together. If you are offered the opportunity, join both!

You are not a member until you are appropriately inducted. The Induction Ceremony is a proper affair, deserving of suit and tie attire. It is not secret in any manner, and you will be encouraged to invite your parents, family, and friends to share in the great life-long honor you are receiving. The Ceremony is typically conducted on your college campus by the College Chapter Officers, sometimes with the support of the Chapter's Faculty Advisor or other faculty members.
The ceremony itself will acquaint you with a brief history of Eta Kappa Nu, the Emblem and its unique significance to the organization and to you personally, the Coat of Arms of the organization, the derivation of our name (Eta Kappa Nu), and counsel you on the expectations of you as a student member and in your after-graduation professional career.
At the conclusion you will officially become a member of Eta Kappa Nu, and be presented with your personal certificate of membership. Now you are a member!
